FiberTite® Versus TPO: Rooftop Performance that Beats the Test of Time

FiberTite and Thermoplastic Polyolefin (TPO) based membrane manufacturers have at least two important things in common: 1) We both want to be your roofing solution; and, 2) We don’t know how long our products will last. Choosing a FiberTite roofing solution, however, comes with the advantage of letting you contemplate the latter with confidence.

This New Year, FiberTite is celebrating nearly 30 years of service on rooftops across the U.S. We’ve reached this milestone without making any significant alterations to the original FiberTite compound. We never had to. Over 99% of our roofs ever installed are still protecting. Many of our oldest roofs were installed in Florida where they are still standing up to the most unforgiving UV rays and winds in the country.

TPO manufacturers, by comparison, have thus far stumbled through the test of time. TPO’s weren’t introduced in this country until the mid-1990s and most manufacturers are already producing their second or third generation TPO product. Until recently there wasn’t even an ASTM standard for TPO membranes. The standard that exists today allows for great variation among products with no definition for the composition of a thermoplastic polyolefin compound. Yet, TPO manufacturers are selling 20-year warranties for roofing products that have only endured several years of field performance.

FiberTite was selected as the benchmark membrane for the development of the ASTM D6754-02 standard for membranes using KEE - Ketone Ethylene Ester. FiberTite exceeds the requirements of this standard which requires the polymer content of a membrane to be composed of a minimum of 50% KEE. We use DuPont Elvaloy® KEE as the foundation of the FiberTite Roofing Systems membrane to ensure the membrane's long-term strength and continuing flexibility, especially in harsh environments.

For a roofing solution with an inimitable performance record, choose FiberTite.

FiberTite Announces the 2006 "Project of the Year"

In November at the National Sales Meeting, FiberTite leaders named Mont Bleu Resort Casino & Spa in Lake Tahoe, NV the 2006 “FiberTite Project of the Year”. Those involved in the sales, specification and installation of a FiberTite Roofing System on this facility shared in the award. Recipients include Tom Absher of Source 7, the FiberTite Manufacturer’s Representative firm in Northern California, Independent Roofing Consultants (IRC) of Dublin, CA and Western Single Ply, the roofing contractor based in Sparks, NV.

Each year, FiberTite team members submit their most challenging and unique projects to the contest and a winner is selected based on specific criteria, including the level of effort involved in selling the job, the size of the roof, the complexity of the design and installation of the roofing system and the significance of the project within its geographic region.

Mont Bleu Resort Casino & Spa, owned by Columbia Sussex, a Kentucky based development firm involved in building major hotels and casinos across the country, is situated at the foot of Heavenly Ski Resort across from Lake Tahoe. The owner was looking to replace a modified bitumen system with a product that would be uniform and aesthetically pleasing on a roof with multiple levels and sections and a variety of substrates. The system needed to be easily installed in inclement weather without disruption to an operating hotel and casino.

After performing a comprehensive review of the existing building conditions IRC determined that a thermoplastic single-ply fully adhered system, incorporating polyisocyanurate insulation and a fiberglass wrapped gypsum core board would best address the owner’s needs.

“We specified the FiberTite product,” reported Rob Worthing, Project Manager for IRC, “because it met the owner’s needs and provided proven long-term, cold weather performance.”

The 2,400 square FiberTite Roofing System in Thermal Tan was fully installed by November 1, 2006. All awardees received a customized engraved trophy and recognition among their peers.
